The last decade has truly been a golden age for gaming. We have been treated to a whole host of amazing titles. Ranging from unique genre defining cinematic experiences to addictive competitive games that we simply can’t get enough of. We struggled to narrow this list down. Our team spent a long time arguing over which titles deserved a spot on this list. But we eventually figured it out. So let’s take a look at our picks for the best games of the last decade.
Disco Elysium
There are certain games that come along and completely change the gaming landscape forever. They shake up the established notions of genre and leave an indelible impression on the entire industry. Dark Souls is one such example of this. But we believe that Disco Elysium is the ultimate example of this phenomenon.
The game has all the trappings of a classic CRPG. A wide set of stats that you can level up as you progress. Dialogue trees. Exploration mechanics. But this is where the similarities to other CRPGs ends. Disco Elysium is the most unique and creative take on the genre we have ever seen.
Each of the skills in this game are parts of your character’s personage. And they will chime in during conversations or random moments. Not only are you building a unique skillset but you are also strengthening the characters that are each individual skill. Beyond the unique leveling system the game boasts an intense and complex narrative. The story is intimate and personal. Which is a nice change of pace as most RPGs tend to engross you in a grand narrative. By drawing the story inwards the developers have crafted a story that will stay with you for years to come.
Rocket League
While we do love an intense and expansive RPG, sometimes we just want to kick back and relax with a wacky competitive title. And Rocket League is the undisputed king in that regard. On the surface the game looks wacky and simple. But it is actually one of the most skill intensive competitive games out there.
RL was released way back in 2015. Yet it still boasts an extremely active playbase and ranked community. The competitive scene is still going from strength to strength. This is thanks to the fact that the game doesn’t fall into the traps of having a meta. It is an entirely skill based environment. It is also why RL boosting services are still so popular. The RL pro tournaments are still running and boast impressive prize pools. Making it an appealing prospect for anyone who enjoys rising up the ranks of a competitive game.
Baldur’s Gate 3
We couldn’t avoid talking about BG3. D & D has been growing in popularity in recent years. Thanks to shows like Critical Role and Dimension 20. People had been asking for a faithful Dungeons and Dragons game for years. One that truly encapsulates the tabletop experience without sacrificing narrative integrity. And BG3 delivers on all fronts.
One of the biggest selling points of BG3 is that it allows for every type of playstyle. If you’re someone who is more concerned with the narrative and character interactions then you can enjoy the game on the lowest difficulty. Or if you’re someone who enjoys creating powerful characters who will dominate in combat then there is enough complexity to sink your teeth into.
The game is extremely faithful to its tabletop counterpart. Featuring many of the most popular spells, classes, and races. The character creator is a great tutorial for making your own pen and paper character too. So much so that there are now thousands of new D & D players who learnt how to play through BG3.
Elden Ring
FromSoftware is one of the most infamous developers on the planet. But their infamy is only brought about because their games are notoriously difficult to master. Dark Souls was recently named the ultimate game of all time. A prestigious honour that is well deserved. And FromSoftware didn’t rest on their laurels after the success of Dark Souls.
Elden Ring was first announced way back in 2019. And fans had to wait another 3 years before the game was released. Speculation ran wild during these years. But it was well worth the wait. Elden Ring was the most expansive Souls title yet. It contained all the usual hallmarks fans have come to expect from a FromSoftware title. But mixed in with a beautiful open world. The true strength of Elden Ring lies in the freedom the player is offered. There are no quest markers or a cumbersome UI cluttering up your screen. You simply have to follow your adventurous instincts and see what is over the horizon.
Elden Ring was also the most forgiving of the Souls series. Making it an ideal jumping-on point for those unfamiliar with the series. But just because it is more forgiving than other titles doesn’t mean it isn’t still a challenge.
