Summertime in the city!
June 20, 2011
The official first day of summer is tomorrow! And in MY town the first day of summer means it’s almost art festival time! I guess it’s more of an art fair, – I just love it – there is so much cool art to see:: painting, drawing, watercolor, digital prints, basket weaving – the list goes on and on. There’s even artsy jewelry and clothing. Some of it is really funky, but some of it is hip too. You know what they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, which means that everyone has different tastes about what they think looks good.
My family always goes because we love all kinds of art. (Obviously, since I’m always making things, I got my parents genes.) There is also food and music that we like, but I think most of all we go because it’s a fun family activity to do together and it’s outside. We just walk around and look at cool stuff, for free! Summer is the best. I love being outside, looking at cool art and especially hanging out with my family!

I’ve got a ton of things I wanna do for Dad this weekend! Sunday is Father’s Day, of course, and I’m still working on my gift. I’m making him a bunch of coupons he can use whenever he wants extra help around the house. Isn’t that a cool idea? I’ve taken some notecards that I used for school projects and presentations, and painted them in all different bright colors. And I’m going to cut out letters and words from magazines, the big ones from the titles of stories and stuff, and glue them on the notecards. So they’ll say things like GOOD FOR ONE WEEKNIGHT DINNER or ONE DAY OF HOUSE CLEANING.
Honestly, I think that’s the best kind of gift. It’s something I made myself that he’ll really be able to use! Well, I’ve got to help with dinner before I can finish Dad’s present.
Wave that flag!

Tomorrow is Flag Day in the US! We celebrate Flag Day every year – it’s the anniversary of when we adopted the American flag in 1777. So, this will be the 234th anniversary of old glory! (That’s what some people call our flag.) I know you might not really know what to do with an American flag, so here are some tips if you want to display your flag (which would be awesome!).
Always do your best not to let it touch the ground and when you put it away don’t crumple it up, have someone help you fold it neatly. If you leave it up at night, make sure you have a light on it so it’s not in the dark. And whenever you do the pledge of allegiance or sing the national anthem you can put your hand over your heart to show your respect. Happy Flag Day!
