How does your garden grow?
July 18, 2011
I’ve been learning how to make some amazing salads with the stuff in my garden, and I wanted to share some ideas with you. I know that sometimes salads aren’t so good, but the ones I’ve been making this week are awesome and totally simple. Plus, they’re yummy when it’s hot outside so they are perfect for this time of year!
Usually I just start with lettuce or spinach, and then I think about other food groups to add so it can become more like a complete meal. So after the veggies, like tomatoes and cucumbers, I think about some kind of protein. Protein is important because it will help fill you up and it even helps you digest all the nutrients in the veggies so you get more out of your salad. So. Protein. Think meat, but don’t forget about other kinds of protein like eggs and nuts, which both taste amazing in salads.
Then you get to add your favorite salad dressing! There are so many kinds to choose from, sometimes it is hard to pick the one you like the best.
Well, since I told mom I’d make us one for dinner I better go pick and wash some more lettuce.
Talk to you later!
Food and friends
July 13, 2011
Our hike was amazing but I think the dinner afterwards was even better. We had steak and baked potatoes and for dessert we made peach cobbler in real Dutch ovens. One of the badges we are earning this week is for Camp Cooking, so I am trying to learn as much about it as I can. It’s like an art. It definitely takes skill because you cook with coals and lots of aluminum foil, instead of a regular oven. We also learned how to make a chore list for camp, like who has to clean and who gets to cook each night. I mean, cooking is the best part, I think. But it’s only fair to share the fun.
Tomorrow we have an eco-challenge. It’s kinda like an obstacle course where you have to do a bunch of different activities in a certain amount of time, but an eco-challenge is with teams, so it’s way more fun because your buddies are with you. Plus, the eco-challenge has us using maps to hike through the woods to each activity, so it will be really important to have my friends with me.
Anyway, I gotta go get ready for the flag ceremony. It’s the end of the day and I get to help take it down this time!
Have an awesome week!
Sleeping bag disaster!
July 11, 2011
You’re not gonna believe what happened. When I got to camp, the counselors told us we had a full day of activities before we were gonna set up our tents (which is like, THE best part about camp, right?). So in the afternoon we all grabbed our stuff from the main lodge and had to walk over a bridge to get to our campsites. I had so much stuff in my hands that my sleeping bag slipped out of my fingers and tumbled all the way down to the river! Luckily the camp staff had extras so I didn’t have to sleep without one. Thank goodness for prepared scouts!
Tomorrow we are going on a hike, but apparently where we’re going is a secret, so I’ll have to tell you more about it on Wednesday.
Check ya later!
